Susan B. Anthony Anthony, Susan Brownell
1820—1906

American reformer, b. Adams, Mass. Active in temperance, abolitionist, and woman suffrage
movements (from c.1850); with Elizabeth Cady Stanton organized National Woman Suffrage Association (1869); traveled, campaigned, wrote tirelessly on behalf of suffrage; president, National American Woman Suffrage Association (1892—1900). Author, with Stanton and M.J. Gage, of History of Woman Suffrage (1881—1902).

Frederick Douglass Douglass, Frederick

American abolitionist and writer, b. Tuckahoe, Md. Born
a slave; escaped (1838); settled in New Bedford, Mass., changing his name to Frederick Douglass. Addressed antislavery convention, Nantucket (1841); engaged as agent of Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society; published his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (1845). Lectured in Britain and Ireland (1845-47); with proceeds from lectures, bought his freedom; settled at Rochester, N.Y.; founded and edited (1847-60), with M. R. Delany (q.v.), the North Star (from 1851 called Frederick Douglass's Paper), an abolitionist paper. Opposed radical abolitionism as espoused by W.L. Garrison and counseled against John Brown's raid (1859). At outbreak of Civil War, helped recruit black regiments; consulted by Lincoln. U.S. marshal for District of Columbia (1877-81); recorder of deeds, District of Columbia (1881-86); U.S. minister to Haiti (1889-91).

George Eastman Eastman, George
1854—1932

American inventor and industrialist, b. Waterville, N.Y. Perfected process for making photographic dry plates (1880) and flexible film (patented 1884), and invented the Kodak box camera (1888); introduced daylight-loading film (1892). Organized business as Eastman Kodak Co. (1892); introduced Brownie camera (1900). Later noted as philanthropist; founder,Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N.Y.

Nathaniel RochesterRochester, Nathaniel
1752—1831

American pioneer, b. Westmoreland Co., Va. Purchased land (1800) in Genesee region of upper New York state and founded the city of Rochester (1811).

General all-around likeable guy, b. Rochester, NY. Worked as research scientist (1988—1999) before becoming a computer geek. B.S. in Biotechnology from RIT. Hopes to complete his IT degree and find a good-paying computer job before school loans bankrupt him.
